The United Nations General Assembly declared 2021-2030 the Decade of Healthy Aging. This implies enabling the elders to remain physically and cognitively active citizens. In order to enhance their wellbeing, citizens also need proper education. Information and Communication Technologies, and especially Artificial Intelligence (AI), are called upon to play a key role in providing citizens with trusted evidence and coherent support to make informed decisions that contribute to enhance social inclusion and to promote health and wellness. This approach, committed to human-centered AI principles, should be grounded on eXplainable AI (XAI), an endeavor to evolve AI towards new intelligent agents capable of generating conclusions that can be readily understood by their users, and explicitly explaining such conclusions. Even if XAI is a fruitful research field, there are still 3 main open challenges: (1) Designing algorithms that can be inquired about the assumptions, estimates and judgements involved in their conclusions; (2) implementing interactive human-machine interfaces adapted to different users skills; (3) validating the XAI developments in real-world problems.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The XAI4SOC project will create an open source framework for the design, development, validation, evaluation and deployment of a new generation of ubiquitous XAI agents (algorithms and interfaces) for enhancing the prominence of their target users, with the support of caregivers, therapists and educators, in pursuing a healthy ageing and wellbeing development.<\/p>

We have selected two target populations \nfor validation purposes, as they are considered more vulnerable either physically, cognitively or socially. On the one hand, the XAI4SOCUSC subproject pays attention to healthy ageing by focusing on elderly and ageing people at risk of dementia. On the other hand, the XAI4SOC-UJI subproject pays attention to social wellbeing by focusing on enhancing cognitive skills in teenagers.<\/p>

Thus, the XAI4SOC project will seek to improve the physical, mental and social wellbeing of the target users through the successive application of a monitoring-interpretation-intervention cycle. A sample from both target populations will be subjected to physiological, physical, emotion and cognitive monitoring in two longitudinal studies throughout the project.<\/p>

The goal is to interpret from collected data:<\/p>

  1. those variables that can play a predictive role in the assessment of physical or cognitive decline;<\/li>
  2. those variables that can play a meaningful role in the detection of states of anxiety, stress or depression;<\/li>
  3. those variables that can play a relevant role in developing new desired skills;<\/li>
  4. those attitudes that can hinder or impede the social integration of the individual.<\/li><\/ol>

    The XAI4SOC agents will provide target users, their caregivers, therapists and educators, with a tailor-made set of solutions based on gamification strategies and persuasive communication techniques for promoting and enhancing healthy habits, cognitive skills and social involvement. The XAI4SOC agents will provide citizens with valuable insights in a natural way through explainable and accessible multimodal interfaces (i.e., combining verbal and non-verbal communication languages).<\/p>

    At the end of the project, all new resources (XAI4SOC-API, XAI4SOC-emoBook and XAI4SOC-cogGames apps, XAI4SOC-health and XAI4SOC-edu datasets) will be released as open source.<\/p>
